An annual tradition on the third Monday in January, is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Known as a “Day On, not a day OFF,” it s the only federal holiday which is also observed as a national day of service and is part of the President’s national call to service initiative.
To honor the spirit of Dr King’s vision of a “Beloved Community”, United Way HandsOn Suncoast is seeking 4,000 volunteers to participate in a range of organized community projects on January 18-20, 2014 to celebrate King’s birthday.
This milestone is a perfect opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.
The King-inspired initiatives are made possible through a signature grant from the Points of Light Institute affiliate HandsOn Network, a Corporation for National & Community Service intermediary grantee. United Way HandsOn Suncoast is the recipient of one of only five sub-grants. The goals of the award are to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., mobilize volunteers to serve, generate civic dialogue, and inspire continued community service.
Across America, the HandsOn Network expects to mobilize more than 185,000 volunteers and impact more than 500,000 people during MLK Days of Service.
Join the celebration today by registering individually or with a group to participate in one of many projects during the Days of Service.
