Loveland Volunteer Opportunities [SAR]

The Loveland Center is a non-profit organization for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Loveland strives to achieve “Equality through Opportunity” for its participants through educational, vocational and supported living services. Loveland participants attend Loveland one (1) to five (5) days a week, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Loveland is open all year. The day is divided into two classes. First period is from 9:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. with a break during class. Lunch is from 11:30 until 12:15. Second period is from 12:15 p.m. until 2:15 p.m. with a break during class.

Do you have time and talents to share? We have various opportunities for volunteers to support our mission in the following areas:

Self-Contained Class (formerly Phase II/Nexus) – Bldg. E – Lead Instructor is Jim Horton.

Volunteers are needed any day, mornings or afternoons. Volunteers are needed to engage students in conversation; Assisting with table top activities (Completing puzzles, Play cards, Arts and Crafts, Board Games); Computer Activities; Academic Pursuits – reading / writing; Storytelling; Helping prepare and clean-up for break and lunch; Sitting with students to ensure safety; Share Musical Abilities – Play an instrument – lead a sing-a-long; Teach a lesson; Take a walk and Help transport students in wheel chairs between activities.

Adult Day Training (ADT)

Assist in Classroom Activities – Academics, Beading, Computers, Cooking, Gardening, Health & Safety, Life Skills, Art & Mosaics, Wellness, our new ACE Class (Accessibility, Communication & Expression Class) and Foundations Class.

Academics – Instructor Linda Walker. Volunteers are needed to work one-on-one with students practicing math and reading skills. She also needs volunteers to help with field trips to the Jacaranda Library (meet at the Library) in the afternoons on the 1st and 3rd Monday and Wednesday of the month. Class volunteers are needed Monday-Friday (except on Library days!) second period. (12:15-2:15.)

ACE – Instructor Ken Arambasic. Volunteers are needed to assist the class in community outings and in the classroom. The ACE class is out in the community 2-3 times per week, entertaining the residents of Assisted Living facilities, and clubs, such as Kiwanis, throughout the Venice area.

Beading/Jewelry – Instructor Elaine Cyr. Volunteers are needed to assist students in design and finishing up projects that the students make. Consists of small bead work and a steady hand it needed.

Cooking/Open Learning Center (OLC) – Instructor Donna Richards. Volunteers are needed to help in the cooking class on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. In the OLC class volunteers are needed help on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Volunteers will assist students in their projects.

Foundations Class – Instructor Kelly Gillen. Volunteers are needed on Monday mornings to assist the class in shopping at Publix, on Tuesdays, 1st period in cooking class and Fridays, all day for community outings.

Healthy Kitchen Academy – Instructor Craig Paige. Volunteers are need Monday-Thursday from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Lunch is included most days. Volunteers will help monitor safety, food handling and light clean-up. Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, short sleeve shirts (or cuffed) (no sleeveless shirts) and closed-toed shoes with backs.

Mosaic/Art Class –Instructor Susan Georgi. The Mosaic Class is held on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. Volunteers are needed to assist in cutting glass, grouting and helping participants with designs. On Thursday and Fridays participants work on different art projects and learn elements of design, colors and cutting and pastings. Help is also needed with community outings.

Wellness Class – Instructor Catherine Blake. Volunteers are needed to help participants participate in exercises on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings, and Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Assistance is also needed on Friday afternoons (11:30-2:15) with field trips.

EmployAbilities (Supported Employment)

Assisting with Community Outreach and marketing for the program (attending networking events, job fairs, community events, etc.) Help clients with resume development, assisting with job searches and providing interview preparation. Volunteers needed to Facilitating a Job Club, Work Readiness Training program and/or Soft Skills training program.

Programs & Services Administration

Advisor & Facilitator for Student Self-Advocacy Committee (research advocacy issue (at home or with a Committee member once a week) to bring to monthly meeting (2nd Wed/month, 1-2:25 p.m.) to share with the committee, assist committee chair with running the meeting, take & type meeting notes, assist committee secretary with committee records & attendance logs. Requires a strong belief in self-advocacy, and organizational skills to assist chair and secretary in maintaining committee records.

Facilities, Fleet and IT

Our Facilities, Fleet and IT department are always in need of help in maintaining the Loveland campus, vehicles and computers. Skilled and unskilled help is welcome.

Development and Special Events –

Help the development department with calls to donors, fundraising events and community outreach. Help promote the Loveland Center message at community events. Periodic help is needed for ticket sales, distributing flyers and other Loveland literature, obtaining sponsors, finding items for silent auctions, transporting large items to and from event sites, checking in guests, serving food, cleaning up and tearing down.

Loveland Village Activities

Help with activities with Residents at the Nancy Detert Residences. These can include assisting Residents on outings (movies, trips to the beach, etc.), activities for Residents at the Clubhouse and weekend activities.
