Joy of Reading Pop Up Book Fair
Bess the Book Bus is a mobile literacy outreach non-profit dedicated to narrowing the academic achievement gap. We instill a love of reading in asset limited communities by supplying free high quality books to children, caregivers, and educators and making the joy of book ownership a reality.
Our Joy of Reading Pop-Up Book Fairs provide access to new books and give children the power of choice. We create an environment that is fun and interactive, a place where everyone can engage in discussion about the books being offered. Inviting students to choose their own books or suggesting books that they can read and want to read has a profound positive effect on both longer term motivation and comprehension.
Volunteers will assist a small group of children as each class visits (the size of the groups may vary according to schedules and circumstances). The volunteer will assist the children in picking out their books and sit/stand and read/interact with them before and/or after the books are chosen. As these book fairs are designed to promote enthusiasm for books and reading, volunteers play an important role in modeling a reader’s excitement and joy.
Wear comfortable clothing and shoes appropriate for an elementary school (pants, t-shirt, casual dresses). Be prepared to be outside (we will be in a covered area if possible). We will be indoors if there is rain. There may not be chairs or benches to sit on so be prepared to be on your feet.
Volunteers must bring a picture ID (ID will need to be presented to check into the office at the school). Park in the teacher parking lot and sign in at the main office where you will then be direted to the Book Bus.
