Salvation Army - St. Petersburg Area Command

The St. Petersburg Corps of The Salvation Army was founded in 1912. Like other Salvation Army Corps, St. Petersburg serves the poor and those in need with a ministry of programs and services designed to meet local needs. During the First World War, the St. Petersburg Corps functioned in knitting and sewing circles, making sweaters, socks and other personal items for the fighting troops. As these traditional "Army" services were offered, the St. Petersburg Command expanded, and so did the St. Petersburg Army's commitment to serving its own community, with a focus on children and families. In March of 2006, The St. Petersburg Corps of The Salvation Army was recognized nationally at The Salvation Army National Social Services Conference with the National Social Services Award for its Sallie House emergency children's shelter program. The Salvation Army, an evangelical part of the universal Christian church, has been supporting those in need in His name without discrimination since 1865. Nearly 33 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. About 83 cents of every dollar raised is used to support those services in nearly 9,000 communities nationwide.
