Opportunity Details

Millennial Con 2017 Serves [MAN]

Applied, hands-on learning is prevalent at Lincoln Middle School with opportunities to learn about urban gardening, hydroponics, earth boxes, healthy eating, tools, seeds, livestock, and more. The urban farm and FFA fight hunger and ensure learning by engaging the children in work on the farm and other community impact initiatives. This method, run by Kim Lough, allows our children to learn by doing and, in turn, sparks interest in topics that can be further explored in the more traditional classroom setting. By supporting the urban farm, Millennials will be supporting the Lincoln Middle School's students' overall education as applied learning and access to healthy food are directly linked to brain development.

Additionally, Lincoln Middle School did not even have a sidewalk for students until a year ago. Millennials will have a chance to landscape the front to better welcome visitors and improve children’s morale. During a visit to the school, potential volunteers commented on the poor state of the front and even mentioned students feeling “neglected” with the state of the “neglected” front.

Join us for "traditional" urban farm work, building up the front sidewalk, and more. We also have low intensity opportunities for those who are not able to participate in more demanding physical activity. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions about the type of work.

United Way of Manatee is proud to support Lincoln Middle School and other programs fighting for the health, financial stability, and education of our community. If you enjoy your time at the farm, please consider the following ways to stay engaged and promote community thrivability:
