Adult Literacy and ESOL Tutors [HIL]

Adult Literacy Tutors are committed to helping adults achieve basic reading and writing skills as well as English comprehension and communication skills. They work with adult students in one-on-one sessions or in small groups. Potential tutors are interviewed, trained, and assigned a student(s) through the Hillsborough Literacy Council to be Adult Basic Education (ABE) tutors or English for speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).
Our tutors and English Practice volunteers are dedicated individuals who receive training, materials and ongoing support from the Hillsborough Literacy Council.  Most of our volunteers have no prior teaching or tutoring experience.  They are members of our community who are willing to commit their time and skills toward helping their fellow residents achieve functional literacy and learn English.
ESOL and ABE tutors meet with their students at least once a week for an hour. We ask our volunteer tutors to make a 48-instruction hour commitment to the program.
This opportunity takes place at various Library locations throughout Tampa and Hillsborough County.
Adults wishing to tutor students in our Adult Basic Literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs may visit our Become a Tutor page.
