JA Finance Park [HIL]
Imagine you're a 27 year old single parent earning $25,000 a year as an office assistant, or perhaps you're a 35-year old regional manager making $65,000 annually. How will you manage your money? At JA Finance Park, 8th Grade students act as adults for a day to make personal financial decisions in a realistic simulation. Students receive life scenarios, complete with job title, marital and family status, income, credit score, and exsiting debt. They visit JA Finance Park businesses to explore their options and better understand which purchase to make based on their life scenario. They must purchase items to meet the needs of their family, such as insurance, clothing, transportation, housing, and groceries-without spending more than they earn. Whatever role they are assigned, students develop lifelong financial skills through the program's in-class and simulated experiences. Volunteers are needed to help build the foundation of our children's future. Volunteers will be placed in a business with students and supervise as they create their budget and shop for their life scenario. Volunteers provide the "ah ha" moments daily as they help students discover the value of themselves, their education, and their future possibilities.
Typical Day at JA Finance Park:
9am -10am: Volunteer training
10am-10:40am: Student set up (students discover their life scenario)
10:40am-11:20am: Research (students visit businesses and learn about different shopping choices)
11:20am-12:30pm Budget &Lunch (students create a budget based on shopping research)
12:30pm-2:00pm Shopping & JA Inspire (students make shopping decisions and visit JA Inspire to discover more about career choices)
2:00pm-2:15pm Student Debrief (students discuss experiences with volunteers and receive final report)
